Court grants embattled former CBN governor, Emefiele’s travel request

The bail condition granted to the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, has been varied by a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja.
The bail condition was initially granted in November, and it required Emefiele to provide two sureties in the sum of N300 million each, with each surety possessing landed property worth N300 million within the court’s jurisdiction.
Emefiele was also ordered to deposit his travel documents with the court and remain in Abuja during the trial’s period. However, at the latest proceedings, Emefiele’s lawyer applied to the court, seeking variation of the bail condition to allow his client to travel within Nigeria.
The application was granted, but Emefiele was ordered to remain in Nigeria for the duration of the trial. The court also adjourned the sitting till January 19 for the new charge to be taken. Emefiele was arraigned before the court on November 17, 2023.
The Federal Government has also modified the charges against the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), escalating from six to twenty. The amended charges were officially presented during a court appearance on Thursday before Justice Hamza Muazu of the FCT High Court.
