A 40-year-old man, identified as Ogbeni, has reportedly died by suicide in Delta State after allegedly battling depression linked to financial difficulties and a failed business venture.
The incident occurred around the popular Ebrumede/DSC Roundabout in Uvwie Local Government Area, where the deceased reportedly consumed a poisonous substance suspected to be Sniper.
According to reports, Ogbeni had borrowed about ₦1.8 million to finance a business, but the venture allegedly failed, leaving him under severe financial pressure.
The deceased, who had been married for three years without a child, reportedly sent messages to some friends and family members late Wednesday night, informing them that he was tired of life and intended to end it.
Concerned friends and relatives attempted to reach him by phone, but their calls went unanswered. His failure to return home that night heightened his wife’s fears, as such behaviour was reportedly unusual for him.
The following day, Thursday, his wife and family members embarked on a search for him but could not locate him.
The situation took a tragic turn on Friday morning when his wife went to the Ebrumede Police Station to report him missing.
Police reportedly showed her a photograph of a lifeless man found at the Ebrumede Flyover Roundabout. She immediately identified the deceased as her husband.
Reports indicate that the man had been seen consuming the poisonous substance before collapsing and reportedly jerking on the ground. Some witnesses raised the alarm and attempted to assist him, reportedly bringing oil in an effort to save his life.
However, their efforts proved unsuccessful before the arrival of the Nigeria Police Force. His remains were subsequently evacuated to a mortuary in Agbaro.
The discovery reportedly left his wife devastated, with reports stating that she collapsed after confirming her husband’s death.
The tragic incident has once again drawn attention to the crushing impact of financial hardship and depression, particularly among Nigerians struggling to survive amid worsening economic pressures.
While financial difficulties can be overwhelming, suicide is not a solution. People experiencing severe emotional distress or thoughts of self-harm should seek immediate support from trusted relatives, mental-health professionals, emergency services or other appropriate support channels.
