Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Rilwan Disu, has approved the dismissal and prosecution of ASP Nuhu Usman over the alleged extrajudicial killing of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Delta State.
The fatal incident occurred on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area, sparking public outrage and triggering swift disciplinary action within the Nigeria Police Force.
In a statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, the police hierarchy confirmed that Usman—also known as Ogbegbe—was found culpable after an expedited internal review. The Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) determined that he acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and established rules governing the use of firearms.
“All officers connected to the incident were immediately withdrawn from the Delta State Command and redeployed to Force Headquarters, Abuja, for disciplinary proceedings,” the statement said.
The committee’s findings were unequivocal: the officer’s actions were unlawful, unprofessional, and a clear betrayal of the police mandate to protect life.
Following the recommendation, the IGP has forwarded the dismissal of Usman and other culpable officers to the Police Service Commission for ratification. Upon completion of administrative processes, they will be handed over to judicial authorities for prosecution.
Reaffirming a zero-tolerance stance on abuse of power, Disu declared that no officer has the right to take life outside the law, warning that violators will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences.
He extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them that justice would not only be done but seen to be done, in a move aimed at restoring public confidence and reinforcing accountability within the Force.
The police also urged the public to remain calm and law-abiding as the process unfolds, reiterating its commitment to professionalism and the protection of citizens’ rights.
