Onobun Cries Foul, Labels Move Politically Motivated

The Edo State Government has marked for demolition the private residence of a serving member of the House of Representatives, Marcus Onobun, following allegations that the property hosted a cult meeting.
Onobun, who represents Esan West and Esan Central Federal Constituency under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), is accused of allowing a gathering of suspected cultists at his home in Iruekpen, Esan West Local Government Area. The claim comes in the wake of renewed cult-related violence in the area.
In a swift rebuttal, Onobun dismissed the allegation as baseless and politically driven, asserting that the State government was using the situation as a smokescreen to suppress opposition figures.
“These allegations are not only false and unfounded but also clearly politically motivated to tarnish my hard-earned reputation,” said the lawmaker, who is also a former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly.
According to Onobun, credible information indicates that the recent cult clash occurred at a brothel near the cattle market, far from his residence.
He further accused the Edo State Government of selectively targeting opposition leaders, citing similar demolition threats against properties linked to other PDP stalwarts, including the hotel owned by the party’s campaign Director-General, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, and the residence of Chief Francis Inegbineki.
“No official communication, no investigation, no court ruling—yet my property has been marked,” Onobun lamented. “This is clearly a law being used to silence opposition voices.”
Taking a final jab at the government’s approach, he added: “If you admire what I bring to the table politically, seek my support—don’t weaponise State machinery to intimidate me.”
