The Department of State Services (DSS) has raised the alarm over an alleged plot by suspected bandits to launch mass abductions of schoolchildren in parts of Edo State, triggering heightened security measures across schools in the state.
According to a security memo issued by the Edo State Command of the DSS, intelligence reports indicate that schools in Edo North Senatorial District may be prime targets of the planned attacks.
The alert comes amid growing fears over the resurgence of kidnapping and attacks on educational institutions across the country.
The intelligence report revealed that operatives intercepted a conversation between two suspected bandits identified as Bawa and Nuhu, during which they allegedly reviewed their criminal operations and discussed a change in strategy.
According to the DSS, the suspects reportedly complained that previous attempts to kidnap wealthy individuals had not yielded the expected financial returns and concluded that abducting schoolchildren could attract greater public attention and force authorities into paying larger ransoms.
Security officials described the development as a major threat, particularly given Nigeria’s history of high-profile school abductions that have drawn national and international condemnation.
In a related development, the DSS disclosed that a 25-year-old suspect, Emmanuel Momidu, was arrested on June 4, 2026, after allegedly carrying out surveillance around Makeke Secondary School in Makeke Community, Akoko Edo Local Government Area.
Investigators reportedly became suspicious after observing the suspect monitoring movements around the school environment. His arrest is said to be aiding ongoing investigations aimed at uncovering the full extent of the alleged kidnapping network.
Following the threat assessment, the DSS directed security agencies to immediately strengthen protection around schools and educational facilities, particularly in vulnerable communities across Edo North.
The agency also recommended the deployment of additional security personnel to schools while urging closer collaboration among the Nigeria Police Force, Edo State Security Corps, local vigilantes, hunters and community leaders to improve intelligence gathering and surveillance.
Parents, guardians and school administrators have equally been advised to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities around schools to security authorities.
Authorities assured residents that proactive measures are already being implemented to protect students, teachers and educational facilities while investigations into the alleged plot continue.
