The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Benin Branch has expressed outrage and condemnation following a violent assault on one of its members, Israel Idahosa, Esq., on Thursday, July 18, 2024.
The attack took place at the Benin Bar secretariat and was perpetrated by a group of individuals identified as supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement jointly signed by Chief Nosa Francis Edo-Osagie, Chairman of the NBA Benin Branch, and Festus Osagie Usiobaifo, Publicity Secretary of the NBA Benin Branch, the association detailed the events of the attack.
The statement highlighted that the assailants, led by Mr. Tony Kabaka, were engaged in a protest when they stormed the NBA premises through Sapele Road.
The mob targeted Mr. Idahosa specifically because he was wearing a cap bearing the name of Mr. Asue Ighodalo, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the 2024 Edo State gubernatorial election.
“This unprovoked, senseless, and cowardly act is a clear violation of human rights and the rule of law,” the NBA Benin Branch declared.
The association emphasized that its members, who were performing their lawful duties, should not be subjected to such violence, harassment, or intimidation.
The NBA reiterated its stance as a non-partisan and apolitical organization, with a diverse membership that includes individuals from various political affiliations.
The association’s primary focus remains on promoting the rule of law, justice, and human rights, rather than any political agenda.
In response to the attack, the NBA Benin Branch has called on relevant authorities to take immediate action. They urged for a thorough investigation of the incident, the prosecution of the perpetrators, and concrete measures to ensure the safety and security of its members.
The NBA also emphasized the need to protect the rights of legal practitioners to carry out their duties without fear or hindrance.
The association assured its members that it would not stand by while they are subjected to such attacks and intimidation. The incident has been reported to the police for investigation, and the NBA is considering internal security measures to prevent future occurrences.
In the meantime, the NBA has urged its members to remain calm and continue with their professional duties.
