At a press conference in Benin City on Thursday, police officials stressed the need to maintain peace and order and prevent unnecessary tension during the election period.

Addressing journalists, a representative of the police command stated, “We have invited you here to assist us in monitoring the activities of those who might be spreading fake news during this election, including misinformation and disinformation. “Fact-checking is essential, and we will be releasing not only the phone numbers for our control rooms but also my personal operational number to promote transparency, accountability, and oversight during this election,” the spokesperson continued.

Citizens were also advised to use the police platforms and contact numbers provided for reporting any incidents or chaos during the election period.
The police assured the public of a robust security strategy that would cover land, air, and waterways, working in partnership with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), other law enforcement agencies, the media, civil society organizations, election observers, and authorised individuals.
