Ikpea, Igbinedion Emerge Unchallenged for Senate and House Positions
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State has resolved to field consensus candidates in the forthcoming National Assembly by-elections scheduled for 16 August, 2025.
This strategic decision, aimed at strengthening internal cohesion and presenting a united front, has seen the party endorse Hon. Joseph Ikpea and Barrister Omosede Igbinedion as its flagbearers for the Edo Central Senatorial District and Ovia Federal Constituency, respectively.
Hon. Ikpea, a former Edo State Commissioner and prominent grassroots mobiliser, emerged unopposed after receiving unanimous backing from party leaders and stakeholders across the five local government areas comprising the senatorial district. His selection is seen as a reward for loyalty and long-standing service to the party.
In a similar vein, Barr. Omosede Igbinedion, a former member of the House of Representatives and daughter of business mogul Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, was adopted without opposition as the party’s candidate for the Ovia Federal Constituency seat. Her endorsement followed intensive consultations among APC leaders, youth blocs, and women groups in the constituency.
Party insiders say the consensus model was adopted to avoid internal wrangling and ensure that the party remains formidable as it seeks to reclaim the legislative seats vacated due to recent resignations.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, 16 August 2025, for the conduct of the by-elections across affected constituencies.
Political observers view the APC’s move as a calculated effort to consolidate its position ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially in Edo State where political dynamics remain fluid.
