The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised alarm about an alleged plot by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to invade the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Benin, Edo State.
The APC claims that the PDP intends to use members of the now-disbanded Edo State Security Network (ESSN) to carry out the attack.
In a statement signed by the APC State chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, a copy of which was made available to Uptown Press on Wednesday, the party accused the PDP of orchestrating this plan in response to the on-going inspection of election materials by political parties at the INEC office.
According to Tenebe, the PDP, frustrated by the inspection outcomes, has resorted to extreme measures, including allegedly planning an assault on the inspection venue using the former ESSN members.
Tenebe further alleged that the disbanded ESSN members had previously been linked to violent acts, including the murder of Police Inspector Akor Onuh.
He claimed that Governor Godwin Obaseki had promised to recall these members and might now be planning to use them to further violent objectives.
“The All Progressives Congress is by this statement informing the general public that Governor Godwin Obaseki has decided to unleash mayhem on members of the opposition parties, including INEC personnel,” the statement read.
Tenebe also warned that there are credible reports suggesting that the PDP plans to destroy the INEC office to manipulate the election process, including tampering with BVAS machines, falsifying results, and altering the voter register.
The APC called on law enforcement agencies to act swiftly, urging the arrest of those involved in Inspector Onuh’s murder.
The party stressed that APC leaders, including Chairman Emperor Jarrett Tenebe, would be present at the INEC office to help identify the alleged culprits if any violence occurs.
The APC also claimed that busloads of BVAS machines and fake election results were transported from the PDP’s situation room at Edo Government House to the INEC office, fueling concerns about electoral manipulation.
