The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Mr Jarret Tenebe, has issued a forceful ultimatum to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), calling for the immediate conduct of bye-elections to fill two vacant legislative seats in the state.
Speaking in Benin City, Mr Tenebe voiced strong disapproval over what he labelled an “unjustifiable delay” by INEC in organising elections for the Edo Central Senatorial District and the Ovia North East/South West Federal Constituency—both of which have remained without elected representation for over three months.
“The people of Edo Central Senatorial District and Ovia North East/South West Federal Constituency have been without proper representation for three months now. This is against the spirit and letters of our constitution and democratic norms,” Mr Tenebe stated.
The legislative seats became vacant following the resignation of Senator Monday Okpebholo, who left his post in the Senate to contest—and ultimately win—the governorship of Edo State. Similarly, Honourable Dennis Idahosa vacated his House of Representatives seat after being elected Deputy Governor.
Mr Tenebe accused the electoral commission of neglecting its constitutional duties and warned that such a lapse in representation violates not only democratic principles but also the expectations of the Nigerian people.
He further suggested that if INEC is unable or unwilling to organise the bye-elections due to financial or logistical constraints, the Commission should delegate the responsibility to the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC).
“If INEC is financially incapacitated or lacks the will to conduct these elections, then they should cede the responsibility to the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC). The people cannot continue to be denied their right to representation,” he asserted.
The APC chairman emphasised that the continued delay in holding the elections is a disservice to the constituents and sets a dangerous precedent for democratic governance.
“This inaction sends a wrong message. It undermines the very essence of democracy, which thrives on representation and participation,” Mr Tenebe warned.
Political observers have noted growing public frustration in the affected constituencies, with civic groups and community leaders reportedly echoing Mr Tenebe’s concerns.
As of press time, INEC has not issued an official response to the ultimatum. However, the mounting pressure is expected to draw the Commission’s attention in the coming days.
The APC in Edo State has indicated that it will continue to engage stakeholders and the wider public to ensure that the democratic rights of the people are not curtailed.
