Edo Assembly Confirms New Commissioners, EDSIEC Members

The Edo State House of Assembly, during its plenary session on Wednesday, 15th January 2024, approved the appointments of six commissioners and seven nominees for the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC).

This development follows the submission of six commissioner nominees by Governor Monday Okpekholo on 8th January for screening and confirmation. The process was facilitated by the House Committee on Rules, Business, and Government House, led by the Majority Leader, Hon. Charity Aiguobarueghian.

The confirmed commissioners include Hon. Paul Ohonbamu, Hon. Washington Osifo, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, Mr. Andrew Igegbai, Mrs. Olabisi Idahomen, and Bar. Lucky Eseigbe.

Hon. Aiguobarueghian, presenting the committee’s report, highlighted that all nominees met the requisite qualifications and demonstrated extensive experience across public and private sectors. The House adopted the report after a motion moved by Hon. Aiguobarueghian and seconded by Minority Leader Hon. Eric Okaka.

Additionally, the Assembly confirmed Jonathan Aifuobhokhan as the EDSIEC chairman, with Anthony Aigbokhomhan, Suleiman Ikhuoria, Umoru Frank, Imafidon Osarodion, Hon. Ojo Asein, and Ighomo Egharevba appointed as members of the electoral commission.

In other legislative activities, the House repealed the Edo State Secret Cult Prohibition Law 2018, replacing it with the Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition Law 2024), which introduces stricter measures to combat cultism.

Lawmakers also approved a bill extending the retirement age of magistrates and presidents of Area Customary Courts in the state, effective 2025.

The plenary was adjourned to Thursday, 16th January 2025, following a motion by Hon. Osamwonyi Atu, seconded by Hon. Kingsley Ugabi.
