The Edo State House of Assembly has commenced moves to harmonise 39 existing education laws into a unified legal framework aimed at strengthening the State’s education system and improving learning outcomes.
The initiative took centre stage at a legislative roundtable on education reform in Benin City, which brought lawmakers and key stakeholders in the education sector together to examine existing laws and identify areas requiring review.
The proposed consolidation is expected to eliminate inconsistencies, address gaps in the current legal framework and provide clearer guidelines for the administration and development of education across the State.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Health, Hon. Donald Okugbe, chaired the roundtable, which focused on developing reforms capable of advancing educational standards in Edo State.
Speaking during an interview, the member representing Oredo West Constituency, Dr. Richard Edosa, said the engagement was designed to encourage collaboration between lawmakers and education stakeholders in finding lasting solutions to the sector’s challenges.
โWe are putting heads together, rubbing minds on educational reforms that will propel our State to greater heights,โ Edosa said.
The exercise underscores the Assembly’s efforts to review the legal foundations of education in Edo State and ensure that existing legislation reflects the changing needs of schools, teachers and students.
Stakeholders hope that harmonising the 39 laws will create a more coherent policy framework, strengthen accountability and support improved educational standards across the State.
