Benin City – The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has declared the impeachment of former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu as a significant achievement for the House, highlighting it as a testament to their commitment to legislative processes and independence.
Speaking to journalists on the occasion of the first anniversary of the 8th Assembly, Agbebaku emphasized the procedural integrity of Shaibu’s impeachment, which took place on March 8, 2024.
“The process of the impeachment was followed to the letter. To me, I stand tall to say that the impeachment of the former deputy governor is a good record because we are doing our legislative duty. That also showed that the 8th Assembly is very independent,” Agbebaku stated.
The impeachment was the result of a thorough investigation by a seven-man panel set up by the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa. Shaibu was found guilty of disclosing confidential government information to the public, a serious breach that led to the Speaker of the House initiating the impeachment petition.
Agbebaku also addressed recent internal conflicts within the House, noting the suspension of three lawmakers on May 6, 2024. The suspended legislators, Donald Okogbe (PDP Akoko-Edo11), Bright Iyamu (PDP- Orhionmwon South), and Addeh Isibor (APC- Esan North East 1), were accused of plotting to impeach the Speaker and other principal officers, as well as being influenced by external forces to destabilize the House’s leadership.
“A committee has been set up to investigate the reasons for their suspension, and they will submit their reports in the next three weeks,” Agbebaku added, indicating that the House’s next steps would be determined based on the committee’s findings.
The Speaker’s remarks underscore a period of assertive legislative action in Edo State, with the Assembly positioning itself as a robust and independent body dedicated to upholding the rule of law and maintaining internal order.
As the 8th Assembly marks its first year, Agbebaku’s leadership appears focused on reinforcing legislative discipline and transparency.
