Farmers in Edo State have started going back to their farms across the 18 local government areas of the state after saying that security has improved in different parts of the state.
The farmers made this known on Wednesday in Benin City through the President of the Integrated Farmers Association of Nigeria (IFAN) and Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Alhaji Bako Dogwo.
He said many farmers who were previously afraid to visit their farms can now return to their farming activities because they feel safer.
Dogwo praised Governor Monday Okpebholo for the steps taken to improve security, saying the development would encourage more farmers to produce food and help improve food supply in the state.
The farmers also honoured the Edo APC Chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, by making him their patron. They asked him to help represent their interests and strengthen the relationship between farmers and the state government.
Speaking on behalf of the Federated FADAMA Farmers, Hon. Prince Henry Ebole said farmers would continue to support the government because of the important role agriculture plays in providing food and jobs.
He said the group currently has about 2,000 registered farmers and plans to visit different wards to register more farmers and create awareness about its activities.
Tenebe thanked the farmers for the honour and promised to support them. He said he understood the importance of farming and believed that better security would allow farmers to work freely and increase food production in Edo State.
