Distinguished Senator Monday Okpebholo, Governor-elect of Edo State, has made an appeal for peace, unity, and professionalism within the Edo State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) as members prepare for their triennial leadership elections.
With the NUJ election slated for December 2024, Okpebholo urged journalists to prioritise responsible campaigning and fair practices.
In a statement issued on his behalf on Thursday, 24th October 2024, in Benin City, Okpebholo stressed the importance of journalists as “critical stakeholders” in society, likening them to the drivers of human development and societal progress.
He praised the sacrifices and commitment of Edo journalists, recognising their role in advocating for an ethical and professional media landscape in the state.
“Our administration values the sacrifices journalists make to educate the public on crucial issues affecting the people,” Okpebholo stated.
“Your work as the Fourth Estate is integral to a functional and informed society. We must work together to make Edo a model for journalistic integrity.”
The Governor-elect, fondly called “Akpakomiza,” further emphasised the essential role of journalists in Edo State, urging NUJ members to ensure that the 2024 election campaigns reflect unity and collaboration. He cautioned against division, tension, and other acts that could mar the integrity of the election process, advising that members approach the election with civility.
Okpebholo also reiterated his administration’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for journalists to work, promising respect and cooperation between the government and the press.
“We’re here to listen and collaborate with you,” he said. “My government will stand by journalists and media organisations for the collective interest of Edo’s progress.”
The election will see incumbents and new candidates vying for leadership roles within the NUJ, with prominent contests between Mr. Festus Alenkhe of EBS TV and Comrade Titus Akhigbe of Daily Times for the chairmanship, and Ms. Maureen Mwine of Edo State Information going up against Ms. Ede Agho of the Nigeria Television Authority for vice chairmanship.
Senator Okpebholo, who secured the governorship seat with 291,667 votes on September 21, 2024, is set to be sworn in on November 12.
His call for peaceful and responsible journalism highlights a progressive start to his administration as he prepares to begin his four-year tenure in Edo State.
