The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has announced that it will relocate its proceedings to the National Judicial Institute (NJI) in Abuja, effective from 27th January 2025. Mu’azu Ibrahim Bagudu, the tribunal’s secretary, confirmed the move yesterday.
The decision comes after a series of disturbances at the tribunal’s Benin City venue, with escalating disruptions caused by supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). It is suspected that these disturbances were exacerbated by an attempt by PDP candidate Asue Ighodalo to introduce suspected thugs disguised as private security personnel to disrupt the proceedings.
The PDP’s actions, which were reportedly aimed at influencing the course of the trial, have been widely condemned. While the move to Abuja has sparked some discontent among the PDP’s supporters, it is seen as a necessary step to restore order and ensure the tribunal’s work remains free from external pressures.
The relocation is expected to safeguard the integrity of the judicial process by providing a neutral environment that is less susceptible to interference. Legal experts have expressed confidence that this shift will allow the tribunal to operate with greater transparency and impartiality, unimpeded by outside influences or attempts to disrupt the legal process.
With the tribunal now based in the nation’s capital, it is hoped that the proceedings will continue with a focus on upholding the rule of law and ensuring a fair resolution to the election dispute.
