The Edo State Government has issued a stern warning to property owners across the state, urging them to pay their outstanding land-based taxes, commonly known as the Land Use Charge (LUC), or face stiff enforcement actions.
This was contained in a statement released by the Director of Media at the Edo State Geographic Information Service (EDOGIS), Dr Tunde Eigbiremolen, who stated that the clampdown is in line with Section 30 of the Edo State Land Use Charge Law 2023 (as amended).
Dr Eigbiremolen noted that the enforcement exercise, expected to commence shortly, is aimed at recovering accumulated debts owed to the state by defaulting property owners. He emphasised that the government requires the funds to accelerate Governor Monday Okpebholo’s ongoing infrastructural projects across the State.
The LUC, according to the enabling legislation, is a land-based tax that consolidates property tax, ground rent, and tenement rate into a single payment.
As the government agency tasked with managing and administering land resources in the state, EDOGIS has begun serving notices to indebted property owners, reminding them of their obligation to settle all charges associated with their properties.
“It is imperative that these charges are settled promptly to avoid further enforcement actions and penalties,” the statement read. Dr Eigbiremolen warned that the enforcement will be executed in three phases: outright closure of the property, imposition of penalties, and legal action.
Property owners were advised to settle their debts within the stipulated timeframe to avoid the prescribed sanctions. The agency further encouraged defaulters who wish to discuss repayment terms or seek clarification to visit the EDOGIS headquarters located at Plot 102, Sapele Road, Benin City.
The government reiterated its commitment to enforcing the Land Use Charge Law to ensure fairness, accountability, and adequate funding for state development.
