The Court of Appeal has reaffirmed Dr. Asue Ighodalo’s candidacy for the upcoming Edo State Governorship election, scheduled for September 21, 2024.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has hailed this judgment as a triumph for justice and democratic integrity.
In a statement released on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP commended the Appeal Court for its boldness in upholding justice. The court’s decision to award costs against the appellants in favor of Dr. Ighodalo and other respondents was highlighted as a significant reprimand against frivolous and vexatious litigations that aimed to undermine a legitimate democratic process.
The PDP described the ruling as a landmark that bolsters democratic practice, validates the credibility of the PDP’s nomination process, and reinforces the will and aspirations of the Edo State populace, as represented by Dr. Ighodalo’s candidacy.
The party emphasized that both the High Court and the Appeal Court’s decisions have clearly established that Dr. Ighodalo was duly and rightfully nominated, had no qualification issues, and that the litigations against him were merely distractions designed to derail the PDP and the people’s aspirations.
The PDP renewed its call for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, to withdraw from the race.
The party urged Okpebholo to address the allegations of forgery concerning his voter’s card and birth documents, which have reportedly hindered the APC’s campaign efforts.
The PDP also expressed gratitude to the people of Edo State for their steadfast support of Dr. Ighodalo, whom they described as a candidate with commitment, respect, vision, and a practical roadmap for sustaining the wellbeing and development of Edo State.
