After five months of suspension, the Edo State House of Assembly has lifted the ban on Donald Okogbe and Adeh Isibor, following a failed leadership change attempt.

Okogbe, a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) representing Akoko-Edo II, had notably declined to sign the impeachment letter aimed at removing the reinstated deputy governor of the state, Philip Shaibu.

The suspended lawmakers were implicated in internal disputes, with Okogbe’s refusal to support the impeachment being a critical factor in his suspension.

Iyamu Bright, another PDP lawmaker representing Orhionnwon II state constituency, had also been suspended indefinitely for his alleged role in a plot to impeach the Speaker and other principal officers of the House.

However, Iyamu was recalled in June 2024 by the Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, after showing remorse. This left Okogbe and Isibor, who had faced similar accusations, on suspension since May 6.

Speaker Agbebaku announced the pardon of the two lawmakers during Wednesday’s plenary session at the Assembly Complex in Benin City.

In his address, Agbebaku also took the opportunity to congratulate Governor-elect Senator Monday Okpebholo on his victory in the recently concluded Edo State governorship election.

He advised Okpebholo to be cautious of political sycophants as he prepares for his inauguration on November 12, 2024, reminding him that his electoral success was for the benefit of all Edo people, not just for his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

During the session, the Assembly also approved a 57-day sitting calendar for the second quarter of the second session of the 8th Assembly.
