The drive to strengthen education and healthcare in Edo State received a major boost as the member representing Oredo West Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Dr Richard Osaro Edosa, donated modern laboratory and medical equipment to the Department of Medical Biochemistry, School of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Benin (UNIBEN).
The gesture, which aligns with his legislative agenda to promote education and human capital development, is aimed at enhancing teaching, learning, and research within the institution.
Presenting the equipment, Dr Edosa described the donation as an investment in the State’s future.
“Investing in education and healthcare isn’t just an act of giving, it’s an investment in a healthier, more self-reliant Edo State,” he declared.
The items donated include spectrophotometers, haematocrit and bucket centrifuges, pH meters, water distillers, spirometers, and various laboratory glassware. According to the lawmaker, the equipment will aid the department’s preparations for its forthcoming accreditation exercise.
“This is just the beginning,” Dr Edosa added. “We are going to do a second phase, maybe even more than what we have seen here today. Until they tell me there’s no space to put anything again, then I will rest.”
He emphasised that access to modern laboratory tools is vital for impactful medical research and training. “Modern equipment is the backbone of medical research and education. With better tools, our students can learn more effectively, conduct meaningful research, and contribute to stronger healthcare outcomes for our people,” he noted.
Members of the Department of Medical Biochemistry, visibly elated by the donation, expressed deep appreciation to the lawmaker and pledged to make judicious use of the equipment to advance scientific learning and innovation.
Dr Edosa, who also serves as Deputy Chief Whip of the Edo State House of Assembly, reaffirmed his commitment to empowering institutions that build knowledge and drive development across Edo State.
