Suspected thugs have vandalised the campaign office of Hon. Frank Uyi Omosigho, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Oredo Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections.
The incident reportedly occurred around 10pm on Tuesday at the campaign office located along Stadium Road, Benin City, with banners, posters and other campaign materials destroyed.
Omosigho, who represents Oredo East Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly, said he rushed to the scene around 11pm after receiving distress calls from residents.
The lawmaker said he met concerned youths at the location who narrated how unidentified persons allegedly stormed the premises and vandalised the office.
Omosigho condemned the incident and appealed to youths in Oredo and across Edo State not to allow themselves to be recruited for political violence.
“My appeal to youths is not to allow politicians to use them to perpetrate violence or other illegal acts. Anyone caught violating the law will face the consequences,” he said.
He stressed that campaign materials were designed to introduce candidates and their programmes to voters, insisting that residents must be allowed to make their political choices freely.
The NDC candidate further alleged that the vandalism extended beyond his campaign office, claiming that his billboards and posters had been systematically removed from several locations across Oredo.
He listed Oguola, Oliha, Five Junction and Ekenwan Road among the areas where campaign materials were allegedly pulled down.
Omosigho said formal complaints had been lodged at Aideyan Police Station, adding that the Edo State Commissioner of Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) had also been notified of the alleged attacks.
The lawmaker urged his supporters and party members to remain calm and law-abiding, maintaining that the alleged acts of intimidation would not derail the party’s campaign.
Omosigho, who was among the lawmakers who joined the NDC in Edo earlier this year, is the party’s candidate for Oredo Federal Constituency in the 2027 election.
Effort to reach the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, for comment proved abortive as she was unreachable as of the time of filing this report.
The alleged vandalism comes amid increasing political mobilisation in Edo ahead of the 2027 elections, with parties and candidates stepping up grassroots activities across the State.
