The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, has lauded Governor Monday Okpebholo for his strides in education, infrastructure and security, while also urging urgent attention to deplorable roads within the Government Reservation Area (GRA), Benin City.
In a communiqué issued at the end of its monthly congress held on 27 August at the council secretariat in GRA, Benin, and signed by Chairman, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, and Secretary, Comrade Andy Egbon, the union said the congress drew a large turnout from its sixteen affiliated chapels.
The journalists applauded the governor’s ban on graduation ceremonies for kindergarten and primary six pupils, describing it as a timely intervention to restore focus to basic education. They also hailed the ongoing Ramat Park flyover project in Ikpoba Hill but appealed for rehabilitation of key access roads within the GRA.
On security, the NUJ commended the administration for successes in the fight against cultism across the state and urged sustained enforcement. It further called on the government to clamp down on the resurgence of Community Development Associations (CDAs) in communities, stressing the need to impose sanctions on violators.
The congress expressed sympathy with ITV/Radio Benin over the recent fire outbreak that destroyed parts of its building, thanking God that no life was lost.
The union also advised Edo government officials to interface more regularly with journalists on policies and programmes, while warning media practitioners against blackmailing colleagues before employers and politicians.
The congress wished the Deputy National President of NUJ, Comrade Oyetunde Abimbola, well in her new position, while commending her contributions to the Edo council.
