The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, has announced a restriction on visitors to the Press Centre until the ongoing nationwide protest against economic hardship comes to an end.
In a statement jointly signed by the State Chairman of the Union, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, and its Secretary, Andy Egbon, and made available to Uptown Press over the weekend, the Union declared that the Centre would be closed from 6pm until further notice.
This measure is to ensure that individuals with ulterior motives do not use the Centre as a haven to congregate.
The NUJ leadership urged all members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities. The statement emphasized that the safety and well-being of journalists and visitors to the Centre are of utmost priority to the Union.
The Union’s decision comes amid rising tensions and widespread protests across Nigeria, as citizens rally against the economic difficulties facing the nation. The NUJ’s proactive measures are aimed at maintaining the integrity and security of the Press Centre during these turbulent times.
Comrade Alenkhe and Mr. Egbon called on all journalists to adhere to the new restrictions and cooperate fully with the Union’s directives to ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone involved.
