The Edo State Police Command has invited candidates and party chairmen contesting in the 16 August 2025 bye-elections to sign a Peace Accord, as part of efforts to guarantee a peaceful and credible poll.
The event, scheduled for Thursday, 14 August at 12:00 noon, will hold at the Command Headquarters in Benin City, according to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, and made available to Uptown Press on Tuesday.
The House of Representatives and Senatorial by-elections are expected to be keenly contested, and police authorities say the accord is designed to promote mutual respect among contestants, discourage violence, and reinforce democratic principles before, during and after the vote.
Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, urged all invited candidates and political party leaders to attend promptly, pledging the Command’s commitment to maintaining law and order while ensuring a level playing field for all political actors.
The statement further appealed to parties, candidates, and their supporters to shun violence, hate speech, vote buying and any actions that could undermine the credibility of the polls or disrupt the state’s peace and stability.
