The Edo State Police Command has commenced a formal investigation into the alleged brutalisation of Hon. Okai Akhani by members of a local vigilante group in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.
The incident, which reportedly took place on Saturday, 26th July 2025, was captured in a viral video that has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation from the public.
In an official statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, the Command described the alleged attack as deeply troubling and condemned in strong terms any form of unlawful assault or abuse of power by individuals or groups operating under any guise.
“The Command will not condone any acts of impunity or human rights violations, irrespective of the status of the individuals involved,” the statement read.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding it, identify those responsible, and ensure they are held accountable in line with the law.
While reaffirming the Command’s support for community-based security initiatives, including the role of vigilante groups, the police stressed that such groups must operate strictly within the framework of the law and with full respect for the rights and dignity of every citizen.
“We continue to support collaborative efforts in community policing,” the statement added. “However, such roles must not be used as a cover for unlawful acts or the abuse of citizens.”
The Police Command also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding while assuring that further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
