President Bola Tinubu has relieved five ministers of their duties, marking the most extensive shake-up of his administration since its formation.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, October 23, by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Among the affected ministers is Uju Kennedy Ohanenye, who held the position of Minister of Women Affairs.
Ohanenye, notable for being the only female presidential aspirant in the 2023 APC primaries, had been a key figure in advocating for gender equality and women’s empowerment in Nigeria. Her departure has sparked widespread conversation regarding the future of policies targeting women’s rights in the country.
Also dismissed is Lola Ade-John, the Minister of Tourism, whose short tenure was marked by efforts to promote Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and enhance the nation’s image as a prime tourism destination.
Abdullahi Gwarzo, the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, has also been removed from office, along with Tahir Mamman, the Minister of Education, who was overseeing reforms aimed at improving Nigeria’s struggling educational sector.
Jamila Ibrahim, the Minister of Youth Development, was the youngest appointee in the administration and had focused her efforts on youth engagement and empowerment.
Her removal comes just months after her appointment, raising questions about the administration’s strategies regarding youth inclusion in governance.
Although no reasons were provided for the dismissals, the decision is viewed as a move by President Tinubu to reconfigure his cabinet in response to emerging challenges and public pressure.
Analysts suggest that this could be part of a broader strategy to ensure the administration delivers on key promises ahead of the 2027 elections. However, the sackings are also likely to raise questions about continuity and stability within the ministries affected.
