The Edo State Police Command has debunked widespread social media claims suggesting that four armed herdsmen were arrested in the State, clarifying that the individuals in question were, in fact, hunters from Kano State.
According to a statement issued on Saturday night by the command’s spokesperson, Moses Joel Yamu, the four men – Yusuf Abdulkarim, Mujaheed Garba, Shittu Idris, and Jamilu Habibu – were intercepted by members of the Edo Security Network and subsequently handed over to police officers at the Ikpoba Hill Division.
Yamu confirmed that the suspects were found in possession of three locally fabricated firearms, six empty cartridge shells, three partially filled cartridges, four machetes, and two daggers. Despite the weaponry discovered, he stressed that there was no indication of any criminal intent beyond their stated purpose of hunting.
Contrary to viral online reports alleging that the four men were armed herdsmen apprehended at a hotel in the Orogbeni Quarters area of Benin City, the police investigation established a different narrative.
“The Edo State Police Command is aware of misinformation on social media that four herdsmen armed with guns were arrested at Americanus Hotel on Osemwenkhae Street after Big Joe Motors, Ramat Park, Orogbeni Quarters and handed over to the police,” Yamu stated.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that they are hunters, not herdsmen. They were from Doguwa in Kano State, heading to the Uvbe community in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State. Meanwhile, an investigation is ongoing.”
The clarification comes amid heightened sensitivity surrounding security issues in the state, particularly with regards to the activities of herdsmen, which have sparked tension in various communities in recent years.
Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, urged members of the public to desist from sharing unverified information capable of inciting panic or creating unnecessary fear among the populace.
He stressed the importance of relying on official communication channels for accurate and timely information, assuring residents that the command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property throughout the state.
As the investigation continues, the police reiterated their appeal for cooperation from the public and stakeholders, noting that any confirmed updates on the case would be promptly disseminated.
