The newly appointed Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Patrick Akhere Ebojele has urged journalists in Edo State to embrace unity and professional harmony, arguing that true press freedom can only thrive where media practitioners work together without division.
He delivered the message on Sunday at the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Christmas Carol and Musical Extravaganza, held at the council’s secretariat in Benin City.
Addressing journalists across various media platforms and chapels, the press chief stressed that no journalist was superior to another, insisting that equality and mutual respect within the profession were essential to strengthening the media’s role in society. He pledged to maintain a cordial working relationship with journalists in the State, assuring them of his commitment to operating in line with the SHINE agenda of the Okpebholo-led administration.
According to him, unity among journalists would not only enhance professional standards but also protect the collective interests of the media, enabling practitioners to speak with one voice on issues affecting governance and society.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Edo State Council of the NUJ, Dr Festus Alenkhe, called on journalists to remain steadfast in supporting leadership that prioritises development and continuity. He urged journalists to critically assess any aspirant seeking their support to become the next Chairman after him, emphasising the need to back only those genuinely committed to sustaining the developmental strides achieved under his tenure.
Dr Alenkhe also appealed to journalists to continue giving the State government fair and appropriate media coverage, noting that responsible journalism played a crucial role in deepening democracy and accountability.
Echoing the call for unity, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, reaffirmed the Edo State Government’s commitment to delivering democratic dividends. He stressed that a united and professional media was indispensable to effective governance and public enlightenment.
The event was enlivened by musical performances from the NUJ Council’s entertainment group, drawing applause and appreciation from attendees. Among those present were Felix Osagiede, a former media aide to ex-Governor Godwin Obaseki, past executives of the NUJ council, and several government officials, who joined journalists in celebrating the season and reflecting on the media’s role in the State’s democratic journey.
