The Edo State House of Assembly has firmly reiterated that the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) was established in line with the Nigerian Constitution and therefore cannot be suspended by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun.
This statement was made following the IGP’s decision on Wednesday to suspend the activities of the ESSN ahead of the upcoming September 21st governorship election in the state.
Charity Aiguobarueghain, the Majority Leader of the Edo State House of Assembly, clarified that the IGP lacks the legal authority to halt the operations of the ESSN.
She emphasised that the agency was formed under constitutional provisions and must continue performing its duties as stipulated by law.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, had issued the directive prohibiting the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) from participating in the upcoming governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024 during a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Benin, Edo State.
