A tragic gas explosion has claimed the lives of a couple, Chioma and George, in Abakiliki, the capital of Ebonyi State.
The incident, which took place shortly after the couple moved into their new residence, has left the community in shock.

The Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, DSP Joshua Ukandu, in a statement to journalists on Thursday, September 12, 2024. He dismissed rumours circulating that the explosion was caused by a dynamite or inverter battery.

According to DSP Ukandu, preliminary investigations suggest that a gas explosion was responsible for the deaths. “The preliminary report shows that it was a gas explosion that killed Chioma, and not dynamite or a battery, although further investigation is still ongoing,” he said.
