The Edo State Public Response Safety Team (PRST) has taken swift action by dismissing an official filmed in a viral video engaging in reckless behaviour while interacting with a bus driver.
The 27-second clip, which gained widespread attention on social media last Thursday, shows the unnamed officer forcibly grabbing the steering wheel of a moving bus in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The aggressive act created a dangerous situation for both the driver and passengers on board.
In the video, passengers can be heard urging both the driver and the PRST official to stop, expressing fears for their safety. Despite these pleas, the official insisted that the driver was trying to evade him.
In a statement addressing the incident, PRST Coordinator Kelly Okungbowa apologised to the public and announced the immediate termination of the officer involved. “There is no perfect society,” Okungbowa remarked, explaining that the dismissal was meant to send a strong message to other PRST officers about maintaining proper conduct.
Okungbowa clarified that the PRST’s role is to enforce traffic regulations, not to be in conflict with drivers.
“Our aim is to maintain order, not to create chaos,” he said. He also called on citizens to report any incidents of misconduct by PRST officials, promising that those found guilty would face appropriate consequences.
In his remarks, Okungbowa also addressed the actions of the bus driver, who was filmed taking the dismissed officer away from his assigned area. He described the driver’s actions as “self-help” and “wrong,” noting that both parties involved in the incident had acted inappropriately.
