Edo Refinery and Petrochemical Ltd and SODEOSA Global Resources have commenced palliative repairs on failed sections of the Benin-Warri Road between Iyanomo and Koko Junction, in a move aimed at improving access and reducing the risk of accidents along the busy highway.
The intervention, being carried out as part of the companies’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), is focused on badly damaged portions of the road that have posed difficulties for motorists, particularly trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of SODEOSA Global Resources, Solomon Uyiekpen, said the repairs were intended to make the affected sections accessible to vehicles plying the route.
“The area we are covering is the failed spots between Iyanomo and Koko Junction. What we are doing is palliative work to make the road accessible to trucks and other vehicles plying the busy road,” Uyiekpen said.
Chairman of Edo Refinery and Petrochemical Ltd, Ologbo, Mike Osime, said the intervention was also prompted by concerns over the dangers posed by the deteriorating condition of the road, especially to motorists operating trucks and fuel tankers.
Osime recalled an incident on the road several years ago in which people reportedly died after a fuel tanker caught fire while traffic was trapped in a gridlock.
“It is better to intervene and fix the road to prevent trucks and tankers from falling and avert such incidents from happening,” he said.
He added that the refinery had previously intervened in the repair of failed portions of the Benin-Warri Road as part of efforts to improve road safety and ease the movement of people and goods along the corridor.
The latest intervention is expected to provide temporary relief to road users while addressing some of the immediate hazards associated with the damaged sections.
