Senator Neda Imasuen, representing Edo South in the National Assembly, has strongly condemned a recent Vanguard publication that alleged that political actors in the district were pressuring him for money ahead of the 2027 senatorial election.
The report, published in the online edition of 21st September with the headline “Edo South: Upbeat for 2027 senatorial election begins”, claimed, citing unnamed “close aides”, that the Senator was facing mounting financial demands from stakeholders.
But in a statement personally signed and released to journalists on Monday, Imasuen described the story as “a tissue of lies, a hatchet job and an act of journalistic irresponsibility.”
“At no time did I or any of my accredited aides make such reckless and damaging claims,” he said. “The Distinguished Senator completely disassociates himself from this desperate piece of fiction.”
According to him, the narrative was nothing but a “sponsored attempt to smear a performing Senator, malign his reputation, and sow unnecessary discord in Edo South politics.”
The lawmaker insisted that contrary to Vanguard’s claims, he has enjoyed massive goodwill and unprecedented support from leaders, stakeholders, and constituents across Edo South since joining the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His office also challenged Vanguard and the author of the report to “produce evidence, name their so-called imaginary close aides, or immediately retract and tender an unreserved apology.” Failure to do so, the statement warned, would leave no option but to pursue legal action to protect the integrity of his name and office.
Reaffirming his commitment to the people, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions stressed that his focus remains on credible representation, empowerment, and development across Edo South, not pandering to “faceless blackmailers or media merchants of falsehood.”
“The propaganda has already failed, and it will continue to fail,” the statement concluded, urging the public and party faithful to ignore the report and remain steadfast in their support.
