Senator Neda Imasuen, representing Edo South in the National Assembly, has restated his unwavering commitment to strengthening the Nigerian media, describing it as the lifeblood of democracy.
The lawmaker made this declaration on Monday, 22nd September 2025, during a courtesy visit to the management and staff of NTA Channel 5 Abuja.
In his remarks, Imasuen hailed the media as “the voice of the people and the conscience of the nation,” stressing that a free, vibrant and responsible press was indispensable to sustaining good governance and democratic institutions.
Commending NTA Channel 5 for its consistency in informing, educating and enlightening Nigerians, he noted: “The work you do here goes beyond reporting the news. You shape conversations, hold leaders accountable, and connect government with the people. That is why my office will always stand with the media.”
The Senator, who chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, pledged continued collaboration with media organisations to ensure credible information reaches the grassroots. He also expressed concern over the rising tide of misinformation and fake news, warning that such distortions threaten Nigeria’s democratic fabric.
He urged journalists to remain professional, balanced and committed to the ethics of truth and accuracy, assuring them of his full support in their role as watchdogs of society.
In their response, the management of NTA Channel 5 described the visit as a morale booster, applauding the Senator for recognising the sacrifices of journalists who work under difficult conditions to keep the public informed.
Imasuen concluded his address with a pledge to use his office to champion policies that promote press freedom, support media development, and create training opportunities for practitioners.
