The Association of Proprietors of Private Media Establishment of Nigeria (APPMEN) has urged political leaders and key stakeholders to strengthen democratic institutions, protect press freedom and deliver improved welfare to Nigerians as the country celebrates 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
In a Democracy Day statement issued in Abuja, APPMEN said Nigeria’s democratic journey, though marked by significant challenges, had recorded notable gains in civic participation, electoral development and institutional growth.
The statement, signed by the National Coordinator of the association and Publisher/CEO of *The Parliament Diary Newspaper*, Chief Precious Enebuse, stressed that democracy should not be measured solely by its longevity but by the quality of governance and its impact on citizens.
“Democracy at 27 is a milestone worth celebrating, but it must also be a moment of honest reflection. The strength of our democracy will not be measured by longevity alone, but by the quality of governance, accountability of leadership, and the wellbeing of Nigerians,” Enebuse stated.
The media body called for the strengthening of critical democratic institutions, including the National Assembly, the judiciary, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and anti-corruption agencies, insisting that democracy can only thrive when institutions operate independently and effectively.
APPMEN also raised concerns over threats to press freedom, warning against censorship, intimidation and economic pressures targeting independent media organisations.
According to the association, a free and independent press remains indispensable to transparency, accountability and democratic growth.
“Private media remains the watchdog of democracy. Leaders must resist all forms of censorship, intimidation and economic strangulation of independent media houses. A free press is non-negotiable for accountability,” the statement added.
The group further challenged governments at all levels to ensure that the dividends of democracy translate into tangible improvements in the lives of citizens through enhanced security, quality healthcare, accessible education and poverty reduction.
It also urged leaders to embrace policies that promote national unity, inclusion and equity, describing Nigeria’s diversity as one of its greatest strengths.
APPMEN commended civil society groups, journalists and democracy advocates for their role in sustaining democratic ideals over the years through advocacy, vigilance and sacrifice.
The association also encouraged Nigerians to remain actively engaged in the democratic process by holding elected officials accountable and defending democratic values within their communities.
Reaffirming its commitment to responsible journalism and nation-building, APPMEN pledged to continue providing platforms for public discourse, oversight and truth.
The association called on the Presidency, governors, lawmakers and other stakeholders to use the 27th anniversary of democratic rule to recommit themselves to the ideals of June 12, including justice, transparency and service to the people.
