The Edo State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation has called on Nigerians to embrace unity, active civic participation and shared responsibility as the nation marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
In a message titled, *“Happy Democracy Day: Voices United, Destinies Aligned,”* the commissioner congratulated Nigerians, particularly the people of Edo State, for sustaining the democratic ideals of popular governance, justice and collective progress.
Describing democracy as the foundation upon which the aspirations of citizens are translated into meaningful development, the commissioner said the system thrives when leaders remain accountable to the people and when dialogue takes precedence over division.
“Democracy remains the grand architecture through which the aspirations of the populace are transformed into tangible progress. It is a system that flourishes when justice prevails, when dialogue supersedes discord, and when leadership remains receptive to the voices of the citizenry,” the statement read.
The commissioner paid tribute to the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic journey, noting that their sacrifices helped shape the democratic environment currently enjoyed by citizens.
According to the statement, the courage and commitment of pro-democracy advocates continue to inspire patriotism, national unity and responsible citizenship across the country.
The commissioner also reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to improving the welfare of vulnerable citizens through policies and programmes aimed at poverty reduction, social inclusion and human development.
“As Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, I remain devoted to fostering opportunities that elevate livelihoods, expand social inclusion and nurture human flourishing across every community,” the statement added.
The commissioner stressed that Nigeria’s future depends on compassion, enlightened citizenship and a collective commitment to the common good, urging citizens to remain hopeful despite prevailing challenges.
Calling for renewed dedication to nation-building, the commissioner urged Nigerians to use the occasion of Democracy Day to strengthen the bonds of unity and work towards a society anchored on fairness, prosperity and human dignity.
The statement concluded with a call for continued collaboration among citizens in building a nation where every individual has the opportunity to succeed and contribute meaningfully to national development.
