The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, has called on Edo residents to embrace sports and make physical exercise part of their daily routine as the state prepares to celebrate Olympic Day on Saturday, July 4, 2026.
Enabulele said sports play a vital role in keeping people physically fit and healthy, urging residents, athletes, coaches, staff of the commission, and members of various sports associations to come out in large numbers for the celebration.
He said the event provides an opportunity for Edo people to join the rest of the world in promoting the core Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect.
The Sports Commission chairman also encouraged athletes, coaches, and staff to engage in at least 20 minutes of physical activity every day to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
This year’s Olympic Day Run, with the theme “Let’s Move,”will hold in Benin City from 7:00 a.m. on Saturday.
According to a circular signed by the Assistant Director of Sports on behalf of the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Edo State Sports Commission, Mrs. A. P. Efe Amenze, all staff, members of sports associations, and other participants are expected to assemble at the main bowl of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium before 7:00 a.m.
The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, is expected to officially flag off the event by 7:30 a.m.
The route for the run will begin at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, continue through Stadium Road, Akenzua Road, Ring Road, and Ekehuan Road before returning to the stadium through Zabayor Street. Participants will receive certificates at the end of the exercise.
Olympic Day is celebrated annually to encourage participation in sports and healthy living. It commemorates the establishment of the International Olympic Committee in 1894, which marked the beginning of the modern Olympic Games.
