The Edo State Government, alarmed by recent escalations in cult-related violence, has intensified its crackdown on cult groups through the efforts of its Special Task Force on Anti-Cultism.

The task force issued a stern warning on Wednesday, urging cult members to vacate the state or face severe legal consequences.

At a press briefing in Benin City, Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, highlighted the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards cult-related violence.
“There is no breathing space for cultists and cult-related activities in Edo State,” Nehikhare stated emphatically.

Nehikhare revealed that the task force, in response to violent clashes between rival cult groups on Sunday, October 27, had swiftly intensified patrols and launched targeted operations to apprehend those responsible.
Preliminary findings indicate that the violence involved the Eiye and Vikings confraternities, clashing over territorial control in parts of Benin City.

โ€œUpon receiving intelligence about this situation, the task force intensified patrols and launched a manhunt for the key leaders of these groups,โ€ Nehikhare said.

โ€œThe swift and coordinated response has already led to a series of arrests, and efforts are ongoing to bring other actors and fleeing suspects to justice.โ€

The task force has since reinforced patrols in identified hotspots to prevent further violence and maintain peace in affected neighborhoods. โ€œThere will be no rest until every identified leader and member involved in these acts is brought to justice,โ€ Nehikhare assured.

Reassuring the public, Nehikhare underscored that the task forceโ€™s operations are part of a broader strategy championed by Governor Godwin Obasekiโ€™s administration, committed to preserving the peace, security, and stability of Edo State. He called on residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security personnel to help curb cult activities.
