The Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, has called on healthcare workers and the general public to adopt proper hand hygiene practices to prevent infections and save lives.
Speaking at a press briefing to mark the World Hand Hygiene Day, which is observed annually on 5th May, the Commissioner described handwashing as one of the simplest, yet most effective ways to protect patients, health workers, and visitors in healthcare settings. He explained that healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are often caused by poor hand hygiene, but could be prevented through regular and thorough handwashing.
The Commissioner noted that this year’s theme underscores the importance of clean hands in improving public health and reducing the spread of infections in both healthcare facilities and homes. He urged healthcare workers to lead by example, urging members of the public to make handwashing with soap and water a daily habit.
Highpoint of the event was a demonstration of proper handwashing techniques by the Commissioner and his Team of health officials. He asserted that clean hands remain a simple but powerful tool in protecting lives and building a healthier society.
