The Edo State Chapter of the Nigerian Legion has elected a new set of executives to steer the affairs of the association, with Sunny Oduware Eboigbe emerging as State Chairman in a transparent and keenly contested election held in Benin City.
The convention, which brought together delegates and elected Chairmen from the eighteen Local Government Areas of the state, marked the beginning of the electoral process. Candidates were thoroughly screened to confirm their eligibility and standing within the organisation, ensuring a credible and transparent exercise.
Mrs Oboba Elizabeth, who served as Returning Officer, addressed petitions raised by members and ensured due process was followed throughout the exercise. Candidates presented their manifestos before voting commenced, in line with democratic procedures.
At the end of voting, Eboigbe emerged victorious, securing all 17 accredited votes to clinch the top position. The contest for Vice Chairman saw Anthony Eloh defeat Aghidi Daniel by 14 votes to 3, while Idris Suleman was unanimously elected as State Treasurer.
The results reflected a clear consensus among delegates, with the new leadership receiving a strong mandate to advance the Legion’s mission in the State.
The Edo State Commissioner for Youth Affairs, Hon. Charity Amayaenvbo, who observed the election, commended the Legion for its orderliness and commitment to fairness. She reiterated the State Government’s expectation of transparency and equity in all democratic exercises, conveying the goodwill of Governor Monday Okpebholo to the organisation.
Hon. Amayaenvbo emphasised that democracy thrives on fairness and inclusivity, urging members to rally behind the new executives in promoting unity, discipline, and welfare among ex-service personnel in Edo State.
The election, which concluded without rancour, was widely described as a model of democratic conduct, aligning with the state government’s vision for transparency and good governance in civic institutions.
