The Edo State Elections Tribunal has upheld the victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo in the 2024 gubernatorial election, dismissing the petition filed by the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Barrister Asue Ighodalo.
Delivering its ruling on Wednesday, 2nd April 2025, the tribunal affirmed that the election had been conducted in substantial compliance with the Electoral Act and that Okpebholo was duly elected by the people of Edo State. The tribunal’s decision reinforces the legitimacy of the election outcome and brings an end to the legal challenge mounted by the opposition.
Following the verdict, Governor Okpebholo extended an olive branch to his opponent, urging all stakeholders to unite in the interest of the state’s development. In a statement released to Uptown Press Nigeria by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Ituah, the Governor expressed gratitude to the tribunal for what he described as a fair and thorough adjudication of the electoral dispute.
“This ruling is a victory for democracy and for the people of Edo State,” the statement read. “The tribunal has reaffirmed the mandate freely given by the electorate, and I remain committed to delivering on my promises of good governance, transparency, and inclusive development.”
Governor Okpebholo also called on Barrister Asue Ighodalo and other opposition figures to set aside political differences and collaborate for the greater good of Edo State. “Now is the time to move forward together. Our state’s progress depends on unity and a shared commitment to the welfare of our citizens,” he added.
The Governor reassured Edo residents that his administration remains focused on delivering key policies and projects that will improve livelihoods across the state. He pledged not to be deterred by legal distractions, reiterating his dedication to fulfilling his electoral promises.
With the tribunal’s ruling now settled, political observers anticipate a renewed focus on governance, as Governor Okpebholo moves ahead with his agenda for the State’s development.
