The Edo Civil Society Organisations (EDOCSO) has successfully held its third annual Leadership Summit, an event aimed at preparing members for the challenges and responsibilities they will face in the coming year.
The summit serves as a key platform for the network to launch its activities for 2025.
Leftist Omobude Agho, the Coordinator-General of EDOCSO, opened the event with a brief address and introduced the theme for the year: “Advocacy, Capacity and Wealth Creation.”
This theme sets the tone for the network’s focus in the year ahead, emphasising the need for robust leadership and the cultivation of skills that will drive socio-economic change in Edo State.
Rev. Phil Arojie, a renowned expert in human resources and capacity building, was the distinguished guest speaker for the event. Delivering a compelling lecture on “Purpose and Expectations”
Rev. Arojie outlined the essential qualities that define effective leadership. Drawing from his extensive experience, he shared key insights into what makes a leader both effective and impactful.
Rev. Arojie elaborated on the “Cost of Leadership” and the importance of having problem-solving mechanisms in place. He outlined seven cardinal principles of leadership, which included:
Discipline, Self-Sacrifice and Service, Expectation Management, Attitude and Technical Skills, Compassion
He also discussed the different types of leadership, identifying four main categories: Position Leadership, Promotion Leadership, Production Leadership, Personhood Leadership
These various forms of leadership were explored in depth, offering the attendees a comprehensive understanding of the roles they can play in driving change within their communities.
Concluding his session, Rev. Arojie shared a memorable piece of advice: “It is better to be the one people are calling for help than the other way round. Leaders ride on problems for success.”
The summit was a highly engaging and thought-provoking event, with participants actively asking questions and sharing insights. The practical examples and dynamic discussions ensured that everyone left better equipped for the year ahead, ready to tackle the challenges and responsibilities that come with leadership in their respective fields.
