EdoDecides2024: EDOCSO Demands Neutrality from Security Agencies

In a spirited rally on Friday, the Edo Civil Society Organisations (EDOCSO), led by Coordinator-General Omobude Agho, called on security agencies to maintain strict neutrality in the forthcoming Edo governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024.

The rally, branded “Security Agencies Stay Neutral in this Edo Guber Election,” commenced at the National Museum on Ring Road and made its way through the streets of Benin City, eventually arriving at the Police Headquarters and then the Department of State Services (DSS).

The demonstration aimed to reinforce the need for impartiality in the electoral process.

Addressing the crowd, Omobude Agho stressed that, the rally was a response to concerns raised during the recent Peace Accord signing organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which was attended by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun.

“This election is not a do-or-die affair,” Omobude stated.
“We have observed some disturbing signs of pre-election violence and are committed to ensuring that no one, regardless of their position, resorts to violence. Our demand is for a peaceful, free, and credible election.”

Omobude clarified that while EDOCSO supports the police in arresting genuine criminals, the focus should not be on personal vendettas or political harassment. The rally highlighted recent instances of pre-election violence, including injuries sustained by individuals, which the civil society group condemned.

In response, Commissioner of Police CP Nemi Edwin-Iwo assured the crowd of the police’s commitment to a peaceful election.
“I am grateful for your presence today as it saves me from extensive media engagements,” Edwin-Iwo said.
“My IGP is deeply invested in ensuring the neutrality of the police. We have managed elections in States like Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa with integrity, and we intend to uphold the same standard here. Any shortcomings will be addressed before the election.”

Edwin-Iwo also expressed openness to on-going communication, inviting the public to approach him for any concerns or information.

Following the rally, the DSS leadership met privately with EDOCSO representatives, reiterating their commitment to supporting a neutral and successful election.
