Independent Television and Radio (ITV/Radio) hosted a debate on Thursday for the deputy governorship candidates participating in the 2024 Edo State gubernatorial election.
The debate featured representatives from several political parties, including Philip Osagie of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Edith Isopkan of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Comrade Bello Aneru of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Yusuf Asamah Kadiri of the Labour Party (LP), and Sir Lord Osas Osunde of the African Action Congress (AAC).
During the debate, the candidates highlighted their views on the role of a deputy governor, stressing their function as key supporters of the governor.
They collectively agreed that a deputy governor’s responsibilities include managing state resources efficiently and complementing the governor’s work. Acting in the governor’s absence, they also said, is another vital part of their role.
Addressing potential conflicts between governors and their deputies, the candidates pointed to mistrust and misunderstandings as common causes.
They noted that tensions tend to arise towards the end of the administration, often when a governor is seeking a successor outside their deputy. They emphasized that loyalty and patience are essential qualities for deputies to maintain harmonious relationships with their principals.
The candidates stressed the importance of establishing a professional and ethical work environment to avoid such disputes.
When discussing strategies to enhance Edo State’s economy, the candidates unanimously acknowledged the dire state of the current economic situation.
They proposed injecting innovative ideas to stimulate internal revenue generation and create jobs, particularly through industrial development. The candidates also expressed a desire to attract investors to the state as a key factor in boosting economic growth.
Regarding security, the candidates promised to establish a robust security network that would prioritize the safety of residents, particularly in rural areas.
They agreed that the security apparatus must remain apolitical to ensure effectiveness and credibility.
In their concluding messages to Edo voters, the candidates urged the electorate to avoid supporting politicians who have been “recycled” repeatedly, asserting that such individuals offer little new value to the state’s development.
