The Chairman of Egor Local Government Area, Eghe Ogbemudia, has dismissed reports of her impeachment, along with her deputy, Franco Osawe, by a group of councillors from the Council.

In a statement issued on Friday evening and made available to Uptown Press, Ogbemudia described the alleged impeachment as unlawful and politically motivated.

She alleged that a minority faction within the council was being influenced by external forces seeking control of the local government’s funds. “The purported impeachment is not rooted in any recognised laws or constitutional provisions,” Ogbemudia asserted.

The Chairman reiterated her commitment to lawful governance, stating that she has not breached any laws governing local government administration and has not received any formal query or notice from the councillors regarding her leadership.

“I am a Democrat and a firm believer in the rule of law,” Ogbemudia said. “Since assuming office, I have adhered strictly to the provisions of the Local Government laws, State regulations, and the Constitution of Nigeria. There is no legitimate basis for this so-called impeachment.”

Calling for calm among the residents of Egor, Ogbemudia urged the public to disregard the claims, describing the actions of the councillors as unconstitutional and aimed at creating unrest in the area. She further accused the sponsors of the impeachment of harbouring personal interests in the council’s finances.

“Their intentions are clear—to destabilise the Council for unholy access to its treasury,” she alleged.

Ogbemudia emphasised that the Nigerian Constitution does not support the removal of a Chairman by a minority group of councillors and warned against actions that undermine democratic principles.

The Chairman concluded by affirming her willingness to work harmoniously with the councillors but insisted that their actions must remain within the bounds of the law.
