The Enugu State Government has suspended the traditional ruler of Ibagwa-Ogbozalla Opi Autonomous Community in Nsukka Local Government Area, His Royal Majesty Igwe Eze William Ezugwu, over alleged violations of the State’s Traditional Rulers Law.

The suspension, contained in a letter dated September 24, 2026, was issued by the Enugu State Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs. The government accused the monarch of failing to constitute his cabinet and establish a Town Union governing body, among other alleged breaches of regulations governing traditional institutions in the state.
The government also alleged that Igwe Ezugwu had been running the affairs of the community single-handedly and was involved in conduct it considered inconsistent with the Traditional Rulers Law.

According to reports, the monarch had previously been invited by the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr Charles Egumgbe, over complaints concerning his administration of the community and was warned about the allegations.
The suspension has, however, triggered political controversy because it came shortly after Peter Obi visited Igwe Ezugwu at his palace in Opi, Nsukka LGA.

During the visit, Obi said the monarch offered him prayers and royal blessings as he continues his political engagements ahead of the 2027 elections.
The timing of the suspension has consequently fuelled speculation in some quarters that the monarch’s reception of Obi may have been connected to the government’s action.

The Enugu State Government has rejected that interpretation, maintaining that the suspension was based on alleged administrative and conduct-related violations rather than Obi’s visit.

The development has put the administration of traditional institutions in Enugu under renewed scrutiny, particularly regarding the relationship between monarchs, community governance structures and the state government ahead of the 2027 political season.
