A 22-year-old man, identified as Onipede Ojo, has been arrested in Lagos for allegedly impersonating a police officer after reportedly stealing a policeman’s bag containing official items, including a camouflage uniform and warrant card.
The suspect was apprehended by vigilant residents around the Maryland area of Lagos after they noticed suspicious behaviour and inconsistencies in his conduct while dressed in police attire.
According to reports, the residents confronted Ojo and questioned him about his identity. During the interrogation, he allegedly claimed that he found the police uniform, which bore the name tag of Inspector Jimoh Weheed, along Maryland Road.
Further checks reportedly revealed that the uniform and other items in his possession belonged to a police officer whose bag had been stolen.
The bag was said to contain a camouflage uniform, warrant card, mobile phone, ATM card and other personal belongings.
Following his arrest, the suspect was handed over to the Lagos State Police Command for further investigation.
Police authorities confirmed that Ojo is currently in custody and that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the alleged theft and impersonation.
The command added that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
While commending residents for their alertness and civic responsibility, the police warned against jungle justice and urged members of the public to always hand over suspects to law enforcement agencies rather than taking the law into their own hands.
The incident has once again highlighted the crucial role of community vigilance in combating crime and exposing individuals who seek to exploit security identities for unlawful purposes.
