The Federal Government has declared Thursday, 12 June, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, offering Nigerians a midweek break to reflect on the country’s democratic journey.
The announcement was made on Sunday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, via a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.
In the statement, Tunji-Ojo congratulated citizens on 26 years of uninterrupted democracy, describing the milestone as a reflection of Nigeria’s “resilience, courage, and strength.”
“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign, peace is sustained, and our future is assured,” the statement read.
He further noted that under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, Nigeria remains steadfast in upholding democratic ideals, ensuring that the will of the people continues to shape the country’s political, economic, and cultural development.
This latest declaration means Nigerians will observe two public holidays within the space of a week. Monday, 9 June, had earlier been declared a public holiday to celebrate the Islamic festival of Eid-el-Kabir.
Democracy Day, celebrated annually on 12 June, honours the memory of the annulled 1993 presidential election, which is widely considered the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history.
