In a significant effort to tackle poverty, unemployment, and irregular migration in Nigeria, the Honorable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, recently had a productive meeting in Hague with various European Union and Netherlands officials. The meeting aimed to secure commitments for immediate support to create job opportunities for Nigeria’s young population and eradicate poverty in the country.
The meeting was attended by high-profile officials such as the European Union Commission Director-General for International Development, Erica Gerrestsen, The minister for Justice and minister of Security Netherlands, Netherlands Secretary General Ministry of Foreign Affairs Paul Huijts, Netherlands Special Envoy for Migration Peter Schuurman, Head of Section Sahel, Africa, and Great Lakes Tijmen Rooseboom, among others. On the Nigerian Government delegation were the Ambassador of Nigeria to the Netherlands Dr. Eniola Ajayi, The Federal High Commissioner on Refugees Migrants and internally displaced Persons Hon Tijani Ahmed, the representative of the Minister of Interior Hon Olubumi Tunji-Ojo, Mrs Dukpe, Representative of CG of Nigerian Immigration, amongst others.
The commitments made during the meeting included a visit by Netherlands and EU leadership to Nigeria for situation analysis and stakeholder engagement, support for poverty alleviation in Nigeria, and the return of Netherlands long-stay visa issuance from the Netherlands embassy in Ghana office back to the Netherlands embassy in Nigeria. These commitments will go a long way in supporting Nigeria’s efforts to alleviate poverty and unemployment and provide better opportunities for its young population.
The EU and Netherlands officials pledged to work closely with Nigeria to create sustainable job opportunities, promote economic growth, and support poverty alleviation projects. The commitment of these countries to support Nigeria in its fight against poverty and irregular migration is a significant step towards creating a better future for the country and its citizens.
