A N55.3 million project earmarked in the 2024 Federal Government budget for emergency dredging works around River Usman Bridge in Gwagwalada and other flood-prone areas along the Abuja–Lokoja Road (Zuba–Sheda axis) has not been executed.
The project, listed as a critical intervention to curb flooding and protect communities during the rainy season, was to be implemented by the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing (FMW\&H).
However, field checks by Uptown Press revealed that no work has commenced on the site, despite the urgency of dredging in Gwagwalada, a water-prone area that suffers heavy flooding annually.
Residents and civic monitors have called on the Ministry to explain the status of the project and mobilise the contractor to site immediately, warning that delays could worsen the plight of communities along the busy Abuja–Lokoja highway.
The failure to execute the dredging has renewed concerns over transparency and accountability in government contracts, particularly those tied to flood and erosion control.
